How to Apply for the Thornton Women’s Scholarship
To apply, visit the Thornton Sisters Foundation’s official website where the scholarship application is available in both Microsoft Word and Adobe Acrobat formats. Applications must be completed and mailed with all supporting documents, postmarked no later than May 7 each year. The foundation reviews applications and notifies the selected finalists before the formal awards ceremony at their annual banquet.
Scholarship Details and Requirements
- Eligibility:Â The scholarship is exclusively for female high school seniors of color who reside in New Jersey. Applicants must have a minimum GPA of “C+” (2.25) and document financial need. Additionally, they must plan to attend an accredited four-year college or university.

- An official high school transcript.
- Three letters of recommendation from teachers or faculty members.
- A 500-word personal essay describing your family background, financial hardships, academic distinctions, and community involvement.
- A recent photograph (passport size).
- Proof of your parents’ income, such as a tax statement (note that W-2 forms are not accepted).
- Additional Steps: A personal interview may be required for finalists, and the scholarship funds will be directly payable to the college you plan to attend.
